We all know the discomfort that occurs when we have a troubled stomach. When we talk of stomach ulcers, they are more uncomfortable and debilitating. These painful sores can cause a range of symptoms, including burning pain, bloating, nausea, and vomiting. But to bring all your worries to an end, here are some home remedies you can follow for managing stomach ulcers effectively. But before this, let’s know the causes of stomach ulcers.

Causes of Stomach Ulcers

Dr Krishanu Banik, Consultant-Gastroenterologist, Fortis Hospital, Anandapur, Kolkata explained that a stomach ulcer, also referred to as a gastric ulcer, is a lesion that emerges within the stomach lining. These ulcers can manifest either within the stomach itself or in the initial section of the small intestine, commonly referred to as the duodenum.

He added that the development of these ulcers happens due to the weakening of the protective mucous layer that lines the stomach, which in turn permits stomach acid to harm the underlying tissues.

As per the journal PLOS ONE, each year, approximately 4 million individuals worldwide are impacted by Peptic Ulcer Disease (PUD), with an estimated overall occurrence of 5-10% in the general population throughout their lifetimes. Despite a significant reduction in the global prevalence of PUD over recent decades, the frequency of its complications has remained consistent.

According to the doctor, the cause of stomach ulcers can be traced back to two core factors: infection caused by a bacterium known as Helicobacter pylori (H pylori) and the utilisation of Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs).

Further, Dr Banik highlighted that other triggers could potentially contribute to ulcer occurrence. These encompass excessive alcohol consumption, smoking, prolonged periods of stress, and specific medical conditions, such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. The doctor said that it’s essential to acknowledge that the degree of individual susceptibility can vary, and not every individual exposed to these triggers will develop stomach ulcers.
