Screen Time Exposure At Age 1 Could Harm Baby's Development: Study

Onlymyhealth Tamil

In today’s digitally connected world, screens have become an integral part of our daily lives. From smartphones and tablets to computers and televisions, these devices offer information, entertainment, and communication. However, the increasing reliance on screens has raised concerns about their potential impact on various aspects of our well-being, including physical health, mental well-being, and cognitive development. This concern is not limited to adults but also to children. The recent research by the journal JAMA Paediatrics points in this direction.

About the Research

The study was published in the journal JAMA Paediatrics, which revealed that exposing infants aged one to screen time ranging from 1-4 hours daily has been associated with increased chances of developmental delays in communication, fine motor abilities, problem-solving aptitude, as well as personal and social skills by the time they reach two years of age.

This study was done as part of the ‘Birth and Three-Generation Cohort Study’ within the Tohoku Medical Megabank Project. It considered a cohort of 7,097 children and their mothers, all of whom were enlisted from 50 obstetric clinics and hospitals located in Miyagi and Iwate prefectures in Japan during the period from July 2013-March 2017.

The scientists assessed the daily screen usage of children at one year old and their performance across various developmental aspects, such as communication, fine motor skills, personal and social abilities, as well as problem-solving capabilities at the ages of two and four. The data were collected through self-reports provided by the mothers.

At the age of two, children who engaged in screen time for up to four hours per day were found to have a threefold increased likelihood of encountering developmental setbacks in terms of communication and problem-solving skills.

What the Study Revealed?

Children who spent four or more hours to screen usage exhibited a 4.78 times increase in the probability of having underdeveloped communication skills, a 1.74 times increase in the likelihood of possessing below-average fine motor skills, and a twofold increase in the chances of having underdeveloped personal and social skills by the age of two. As they reached the age of four, the risk further escalated, particularly in terms of communication and problem-solving aptitude.

How To Minimise The Screen Time For Kids?

Here’s what you can do to minimise screen time for kids.

As per Dr Himani Narula, Developmental and Behavioral Paediatrician, Director and Co-Founder – Continua Kids, Gurgaon, parents should lead by example, serving as role models who not only limit their own screen time but also demonstrate the significance of maintaining a balanced approach.

Dr Narula suggested designating specific areas in the home, such as the dining table or bedrooms, as screen-free zones.

Dr Narula advised providing alternative activities like promoting outdoor play, encouraging reading, engaging in arts and crafts, or participating in family games can effectively replace screen time.

If the aforementioned strategies prove ineffective, employing parental controls to restrict access to certain apps or websites is recommended. Dr Narula suggested substituting screen time with hobbies to sustain interest in non-screen pursuits, gradually reducing excessive screen time to prevent abrupt changes.
