In the ongoing battle against the coronavirus pandemic, the world is facing persistent challenges posed by the virus and its various mutations. One of the latest variants to surface, BA.2.86, has triggered heightened concerns owing to its distinctive characteristics. Originating from the Omicron lineage, this variant is grabbing attention for its high mutation rate and potential to fuel fresh waves of COVID-19 cases. While still relatively limited in its reach, its discovery in multiple countries including Israel, Denmark, the UK, and the US has underscored the need for swift comprehension and strategic response.
According to the World Health Organisation’s technical lead for Covid-19 response, Maria Van Kerhhove, reliable information about BA.2.86 remains scarce. However, the presence of significant mutations within the variant has prompted a call for rapid monitoring and robust data collection mechanisms.
BA.2.86 is a newly found strain of the SARS-CoV-2, responsible for the Covid-19 disease, as per Dr Sabine Kapasi, public health head, UNDAC & Geneva.
Symptoms
Dr. Kapasi explained to Indian Express that the BA.2.86 variant is unusual from prior variants because of the significant number of genetic changes it possesses, which amounts to around 36 mutations relative to the XBB.1.5 variant.
In terms of symptoms, people infected with the BA.2.86 variant have displayed a range of health issues. The most frequently reported symptom has been fever, accompanied by other common indicators such as coughing, fatigue, headaches, body aches, loss of appetite, and difficulty breathing. The severity of these symptoms varies from person to person, spanning from mild cold or flu-like discomfort to more severe manifestations that necessitate medical intervention and hospitalisation.

Decoding the cause of the BA.2.86 variation has proven to be a difficult task. While definitive proof is still unclear, specialists are investigating the possibility that the variant’s increased transmissibility is due to changes that allow for easier person-to-person transmission. Other factors, such as international travel, close contact with infected persons, and environmental conditions, may also play a role in the variant’s emergence and dissemination.
In the face of this evolving threat, adopting robust preventive measures remains crucial. The tried-and-true methods of practising stringent hygiene and adhering to social distancing guidelines remain effective strategies. Regularly washing hands with soap and water for a minimum of 20 seconds, using tissues or elbows to cover coughs and sneezes, avoiding touching one’s face, and staying home when feeling unwell all form the foundation of preventive efforts. Furthermore, the use of face masks in public spaces and maintaining a distance of at least 6 feet from others are strongly recommended.
