He added that when you are not sleeping, the body produces more of the ghrelin hormone, which increases appetite and fat storage, and less of the leptin hormone, which reduces appetite and regulates fat storage.

“Too much or too little of these hormones in the body can make you succumb to overeating. It can make you feel hungrier than usual, leaving you unsatisfied even when you eat a lot, this can lead to weight gain in the long run,” added the expert.

Inflammation

An unbalanced or improper diet can affect gut health and cause inflammation. “When inflammation occurs, even the most disciplined diet and exercise routine may not result in significant weight loss,” stated Vij. He added that when your gut health is compromised, your immune system is also affected. Moreover, obesity exacerbates inflammation, making it harder to lose weight.

Hormonal imbalance due to stress and lack of sleep leads to disordered eating habits. Vij said that people often turn to food to deal with anxiety, but their food choices, such as sugary foods and processed foods, are not good for their overall health. “It causes intense cravings and hunger, leading to emotional or stressful eating. Some may also overeat to cope with stress, while others lose their appetite by under-eating. Neither is good,” he added.

Slows Down the Metabolism

“A good night’s sleep helps the body recover and repair itself. It also helps restore energy. But if you don’t get enough sleep or have trouble coping with stress, your metabolism slows down,” said Vij. He added that poor sleeping and eating habits, high levels of inflammation, and poor gut health lead to metabolic disorders. In other words, they are interconnected and networked.
