Humid Weather Causing Skin Problems? Skincare Tips To Follow

Onlymyhealth Tamil

Monsoon weather brings some respite from the summer heat but it does not spare us from the humidity. Humidity refers to the amount of moisture or water vapour present in the air, which can vary based on factors like temperature and geographical location. The National Capital of India continues to battle hot and humid climate, with no sign of rainfall for the past couple of days. Such weather conditions have started to impact our overall health, including the skin. In an interaction with the OnlyMyHealth team, Dr Aayush Gupta, Associate Professor and Consultant Dermatologist, DPU Private Super Specialty Hospital, Pimpri, Pune, shares how humidity impacts our skin and ways to tackle it.

How Humidity Causes Skin Problems

“Humid weather can indeed lead to an increase in pimples and other skin issues,” says Dr Gupta, adding, “Humidity creates an environment where bacteria thrive, increasing the chances of skin infections. As the sweat we produce doesn’t dry out quickly, it leads to clogging of pores and triggering breakouts.” Other ways in which humidity can impact the skin include:

Excess moisture

High humidity levels can lead to excess moisture on the skin, causing the skin to become damp and clammy. This can disrupt the skin’s natural barrier function, potentially leading to irritation, inflammation, and promoting the growth of bacteria, which can lead to increased breakouts, especially in individuals with acne-prone skin.

Prickly heat

High humidity can cause sweat to become trapped in the sweat ducts, leading to a condition known as prickly heat or heat rash. A study published in the Jama Dermatology found that prickly heat is caused due to a bacteria called Staphylococcus. While normal, they produce a biofilm, which can block sweat ducts, leading to skin problems. This can result in red, itchy, and inflamed skin.

Fungal infections

Fungi thrive in warm and humid environments. High humidity levels can contribute to the growth of fungi like yeast, which can cause fungal infections on the skin, especially in skin folds and moist areas.

Skincare Tips

To protect your skin during humid weather, follow these skincare tips:

  • Use a mild cleanser twice daily to remove excess oil, sweat, and dirt without over-drying your skin.
  • Despite the humidity, it’s essential to keep your skin hydrated with an oil-free, non-comedogenic moisturiser.
  • Always apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 to shield your skin from harmful UV rays.
  • Refrain from touching your face frequently, as it can transfer bacteria and worsen existing breakouts.
  • Choose skincare and makeup products labelled non-comedogenic to reduce the risk of clogged pores.
  • Drink plenty of water to maintain your skin’s overall health and balance. Cool Showers: Take cool showers to minimise sweating and refresh your skin.

Bottomline

While humidity can pose several challenges for skincare, proper hygiene, suitable skincare products, and an appropriate skincare routine can help  manage its potential negative effects. Dr Gupta says everyone’s skin is unique and recommends consulting a dermatologist to develop a personalised skincare routine that suits your skin type and addresses specific concerns during humid weather.
