Have you ever experienced severe abdominal pain, nausea, or vomiting? These could be signs of a condition called acute pancreatitis. It’s a sudden inflammation of the pancreas that can cause discomfort and serious health issues. The good news is that there are lifestyle changes you can make to prevent it. By making a few adjustments to your habits and choices, you can reduce the risk of developing acute pancreatitis and protect your well-being.
Dr Indresh Dixit, Consultant, Gastroenterologist, Cygnus Laxmi Hospital, listed lifestyle tips to prevent acute pancreatitis.
What Is Acute Pancreatitis
Dr Dixit said, “Acute pancreatitis is a condition characterised by inflammation of the pancreas, an organ located behind the stomach. It can be a severe and potentially life-threatening condition if not treated promptly.” It is often caused by gallstones or excessive alcohol consumption, but other factors, such as certain medications, infections, high triglyceride levels, and genetic factors can also contribute to its development.
According to a study by the International Journal of Health Sciences, in cases of severe acute pancreatitis, the mortality rate typically ranges between 2-10%. In roughly 25% of individuals with acute pancreatitis, Severe Acute Pancreatitis (SAP) develops.

Lifestyle Tips To Prevent Acute Pancreatitis
Dr Dixit noted, “When it comes to preventing acute pancreatitis, it’s important to consider lifestyle changes that can reduce the risk factors associated with this condition.”
Limit alcohol consumption
Excessive alcohol intake is a significant risk factor for pancreatitis. If you consume alcohol, it is advisable to moderate your intake or consider quitting altogether, especially if you have a history of pancreatitis or other related conditions.
Maintain a healthy weight
Dr Dixit said, “Obesity and being overweight can increase the risk of developing pancreatitis. Engaging in regular physical activity and following a balanced diet that includes plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins can help you maintain a healthy weight.”
Eat a low-fat diet
High-fat foods can trigger the release of certain enzymes that can lead to pancreatitis in susceptible individuals. Reduce your intake of fried foods, fatty meats, full-fat dairy products, and foods high in trans fats. Choose healthier fats instead, such as those in nuts, seeds, and olive oil.
Stay hydrated
Dehydration can contribute to the development of pancreatitis. To stay properly hydrated during the day, make sure you consume enough water.

Quit smoking
Smoking is a risk factor for several health conditions, including pancreatitis. If you smoke, seek support to quit smoking and adopt a smoke-free lifestyle.
Manage underlying health conditions
Conditions like high triglyceride levels, diabetes, and autoimmune disorders can increase the risk of pancreatitis. It is crucial to manage these conditions effectively with the help of healthcare professionals to minimise the risk.
Be cautious with certain medication
Dr Dixit highlighted, “Some medications, such as certain antibiotics and immunosuppressants, may have pancreatitis as a potential side effect. If you have a history of pancreatitis or are at an increased risk, discuss alternative medications or closely monitor your condition with your healthcare provider.”
Avoid trigger foods and substances
For individuals who have had pancreatitis before, it is advisable to identify trigger foods or substances that worsen symptoms and avoid them. Common triggers include spicy foods, caffeine, and greasy or high-fat foods. Food diaries can be used to find potential triggers.
