Are you tired of skipping out on cruise vacations or road trips due to the fear of motion sickness? That queasy feeling during car rides, boat trips, or amusement park rides, is an all-too-common experience for many.
As per a study by Veronica Takov, McLaren Macomb Regional Medical Center, and Prasanna Tadi, Asram Medical College, Eluru, India, if motion sickness is not treated well on time, it can progress towards severe dehydration, electrolyte disturbances or tears in the throat muscles. The study recommended that prevention is much more effective than treatment of motion sickness, a philosophy resonated by the ancient Indian science of Ayurveda.
Ayurvedic Remedies For Motion Sickness
In a conversation with the team of OnlyMyHealth, Dr Ganesh Chaudhary, Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS), PHC, Darbhanga, Bihar informed, “Ayurveda views motion sickness as a manifestation of an imbalance in the body’s doshas- Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Each person has a unique constitution, and understanding your dosha can guide you toward appropriate remedies.”
Informing about the ayurvedic ingredients that can alleviate the symptoms of motion sickness, and build the body from within to prevent further motion sickness, Dr Chaudhary listed:
Ginger
Ginger is a potent Ayurvedic remedy for motion sickness. It aids digestion, reduces nausea, and has anti-inflammatory properties. Chew on fresh ginger or sip ginger tea before and during your journey.

Ajwain
Ajwain helps alleviate excessive gas and prevents spasms, and hence is a miracle ingredient for relieving stomach discomfort. You can consume it as tea or chew a pinch of ajwain right when you start feeling the symptoms of motion sickness.
Shatavari
Shatavari is an adaptogenic herb known for its calming properties and is considered a wonder ingredient in Ayurveda, with over 100 medicinal uses. It can reduce anxiety-induced motion sickness. Consider taking Shatavari capsules or powder after consulting with a certified Ayurveda expert.
Prevention Tips for Motion Sickness
Dr Chaudhary elucidated that Ayurveda is not just limited to herbs for natural remedies. “It is a complete science that involves a holistic approach that promotes lifestyle and mental health tweaks to promote overall wellbeing.”

“Avoid heavy or greasy meals before travelling. Eat in small quantities, and maintain regular meal times. Stay hydrated, but avoid excessive water intake right before or during the journey. Alcohol can exacerbate motion sickness, so it’s best to avoid it. Most importantly, practising deep breathing, meditation, or yoga can help calm the mind and reduce motion sickness symptoms,” he added.
Listing some additional prevention tips that can be practised to avoid the onset of motion sickness altogether while on a journey, Dr Chaudhary shared:
- Focus on the Horizon: When possible, look at the horizon. This can help synchronize your visual and vestibular senses.
- Choose the Right Seat: In cars, sit in the front seat and face forward. On a ship, opt for a cabin in the middle, where motion is less pronounced.
- Maintain Good Ventilation: Fresh air can alleviate symptoms. Crack a window or step outside for a breath of fresh air.
- Gradual Exposure: If you’re prone to motion sickness, consider gradual exposure to the triggering activity to desensitise your body over time.
Motion sickness can turn any journey into an uncomfortable experience. However, with Ayurvedic remedies and lifestyle adjustments, you can alleviate its symptoms naturally. Dr Chaudhary also warned, “While Ayurvedic remedies can be effective for many people, severe or persistent motion sickness may require medical attention. If your symptoms are severe, consult with a healthcare provider for appropriate treatment. Understanding your dosha and incorporating Ayurvedic herbs like ginger, Triphala, Ajwain, and Shatavari into your routine can provide relief.” By following the suggestions of Dr Chaudhary and taking a holistic approach, you can make your travels more enjoyable and nausea-free.
