Have you ever wondered if your male friends may be experiencing mood swings just like you do? Yes, this is possible and can be caused due to a condition called Irritable Male Syndrome. This condition can make men act grumpy and affect their emotional well-being. We spoke to Dr Ranga Santhosh Kumar, Consultant General Physician and Diabetologist, Yashoda Hospitals Hyderabad, who explained this syndrome, its symptoms, its causes, and how to deal with it.
Understanding Irritable Male Syndrome (IMS)
According to a review conducted by the journal Reproduction, Fertility, and Development, Irritable Male Syndrome (IMS) is a behavioural condition of anxiety, irritation, lethargy, and sadness that appears in adult male mammals after testosterone withdrawal. Men are more likely to become irritable when their oestrogen levels are higher and their testosterone levels are lower. Dr Kumar said, “This syndrome can be attributed to various factors, including hormonal changes and stress, which collectively affect their emotional well-being. Men undergoing IMS may face challenges in effectively managing their emotions, leading to difficulties in their relationships, personal life, and work. IMS is often associated with low testosterone levels and is sometimes referred to as andropause.”

Symptoms of Irritable Male Syndrome
Dr Kumar listed the symptoms of IMS as follows:
- Increased Sensitivity: Men with IMS often experience an increased sensitivity to stimuli, both physical and emotional.
- Frustration and Anger: Anger and frustration are common emotional responses among those with IMS, which may be triggered by seemingly minor issues.
- Anxiety: Feelings of unease and anxiety are prevalent, potentially leading to restlessness and difficulty concentrating.
- Mood Swings: Men undergoing IMS may exhibit rapid and unpredictable shifts in mood, making it challenging for them to maintain emotional stability.
- Emotional Withdrawal: Individuals with IMS might withdraw from social interactions due to their emotional struggles, impacting their relationships.
Causes of Irritable Male Syndrome
Dr Kumar added, “One of the most common causes of IMS is low testosterone levels. As men age, their testosterone production can decrease, contributing to the onset of IMS symptoms. Hormonal fluctuations and imbalances can trigger increased emotional responses and mood swings in men. Also, stress and other external factors can exacerbate the symptoms of IMS, making it difficult for men to cope with their emotions.”
