Uterine Cancer: 7 Early Signs That One Must Know

Onlymyhealth Tamil

Uterine cancer, also known as endometrial cancer, is one of the most common gynaecological cancers affecting women worldwide. While early detection plays a crucial role in successful treatment, uterine cancer often presents with subtle signs that can be mistaken for other conditions.

Abnormal Vaginal Bleeding

The most common and often overlooked sign of uterine cancer is abnormal vaginal bleeding. Women may experience irregular menstrual cycles, spotting between periods, or postmenopausal bleeding. Any sudden changes in menstrual patterns or bleeding after menopause should be taken seriously and evaluated by a healthcare professional.

Pelvic Pain or Pressure

“Persistent pelvic pain or pressure, especially if it worsens over time, might be a sign of uterine cancer,” said Dr Tejinder Kataria, Chairperson Radiation oncology Cancer Center, Medanta The Medicity.

Women may describe a dull ache or a feeling of fullness in the lower abdomen. Though these symptoms can be attributed to other conditions, it is essential to have them assessed by a doctor.

Unintended Weight Loss

“Unexplained weight loss without any changes in diet or exercise can be a warning sign of various health issues, including uterine cancer”, Dr Kataria added.

Cancer cells can alter the body’s metabolism, leading to unintended weight loss in affected people.

Fatigue and Weakness

Fatigue and weakness that don’t improve with rest can be associated with uterine cancer. Cancer-related anaemia and the body’s immune response to cancer cells can contribute to these feelings of fatigue.

Changes in Urination

Uterine cancer can cause pressure on the bladder, leading to frequent urination or a sense of urgency to urinate. Some women may also experience pain or discomfort during urination.

Painful Intercourse

Experiencing pain during sexual intercourse, known as dyspareunia, may be a symptom of uterine cancer. As tumours grow and affect nearby tissues, they can cause discomfort during intimacy.

Enlarged Abdomen

In some cases, uterine cancer can cause the abdomen to appear larger or feel bloated due to the presence of tumours or fluid accumulation.

Uterine cancer is a significant health concern that affects women of all ages. While these seven silent signs can be indicative of uterine cancer, they can also be caused by other benign conditions. However, any persistent or concerning symptoms should not be ignored, and it is essential to consult a healthcare professional for proper evaluation and diagnosis.

Routine screenings, such as Pap smears and pelvic exams, can help in the early detection of uterine cancer. Moreover, women should be aware of their bodies and any changes they experience, as early diagnosis is crucial for successful treatment and improved outcomes.
