Breakfast holds great importance because you’re ending your body’s overnight fasting period and providing the energy it requires for the morning. While some people like a big breakfast in the morning, others might forget it because they slept in or don’t have time to rush out to work. We spoke to Dr Archana Batra, Dietician and Certified Diabetes Educator, who explained the importance of breakfast and why you should not skip it.
Dr Batra said, “If you eat dinner between 6-8 PM. and then sleep all night, you will go for a long period without consuming any food. When they skip breakfast, some people may get migraines, low blood sugar, dizziness, and difficulty concentrating.”
Health Hazards Of Skipping Breakfast
You Don’t Provide Your Body with Vital Nutrients
“Breakfast is a good opportunity to consume essential nutrients like fibre and vitamins that will help you get through the day. Therefore, skipping breakfast may result in you not consuming enough of them, which could have long-term health repercussions”, said Dr Batra. Wait an hour or two before eating breakfast if you aren’t immediately hungry in the morning. Breakfast must include fibre, which will help you stay full all day long and facilitate toilet breaks.
You severely damage the levels of your blood sugar levels
Dr Batra added, “If you don’t eat breakfast, your blood sugar can go down and make you feel both hungry and cranky, which is called ‘hangry’. This isn’t good for you or the people around you.” When your blood sugar gets low, your mood can change, and this happens because of the drop in blood sugar. This can also make you feel less energetic and can affect how well you think.

According to research by the Journal of Cardiovascular Development and Disease, it was found that individuals who consistently skipped breakfast had a 21% higher likelihood of experiencing a cardiovascular event or fatality due to it. Also, they were 32% more prone to overall mortality compared to those who regularly consumed breakfast.
Your Metabolic Rate Declines
Breakfast can help your metabolism get moving and support your well-being. Dr Batra said There is some validity to the notion that eating breakfast can help you burn more calories. However, if you skip breakfast, your body goes into defensive mode and decreases the metabolism, and over a period of time, you start gaining weight.

Dr Batra informed, “If you don’t eat breakfast, your body won’t have the energy it needs, and your brain won’t get the nourishment it requires since your last dinner. Skipping breakfast can lead to bad outcomes, like craving sugary treats.” Even if you’re not a big fan of breakfast, your body needs it to function well. Having a simple breakfast like cereal, a fruit smoothie, or a boiled egg is a smart way to begin your day with good nutrients and steady energy.
