Nosebleeds are a common health issue, which can occur to people of all ages. Medically, it is known as epistaxis and can be an uncomfortable experience. While they are usually not a cause for immediate concern, understanding the underlying causes and potential health implications is important. They typically originate from blood vessels within the nose, often the delicate vessels on the nasal septum (the wall that separates the nostrils). Dr Kunal Nigam, Head of the Department, Consultant Department – Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) and Cochlear Implant, Sanar International Hospitals, Gurugram sheds light on the impact of nosebleeding impact on health.
Causes of Nosebleeds
Nosebleeds can arise from a variety of factors, many of which are relatively harmless. Dr Nigam said that dry air, especially during colder months, is a common trigger as it can cause the delicate nasal tissues to become dry and crack, leading to bleeding.
“Picking the nose, frequent blowing or even minor trauma to the nasal area can also cause nosebleeds. Infections, allergies, and the use of certain medications like blood thinners can make the blood vessels more prone to bleeding,” he added.

Underlying Health Conditions
“In most cases, nosebleeds are not a cause for immediate concern and can be managed at home with simple measures like tilting the head forward, pinching the nostrils, and using a humidifier,” said Dr Nigam.
“But if there is a persistent or recurrent nosebleed, it might signal an underlying health issue that requires attention,” mentioned the doctor. He said that high blood pressure, for instance, can cause the blood vessels to become more fragile and prone to bleeding.
“In rare cases, nosebleeds can be a symptom of more serious conditions, such as bleeding disorders (haemophilia), liver disease, or nasal tumours,” he added. He said that if nosebleeds are frequent, heavy, or accompanied by other symptoms, such as dizziness, weakness, or vision changes, it’s important to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation.
Preventive Measures of Nosebleeds
“To reduce the likelihood of experiencing nosebleeds, especially during dry weather, consider using a saline nasal spray to keep the nasal passages moist,” suggested Dr Nigam.
“Using a humidifier at home can also help maintain a more humid environment, preventing the nasal tissues from becoming too dry. Avoid picking your nose forcefully and use a gentle touch when blowing your nose,” he highlighted.

When to Seek Medical Attention
While most nosebleeds can be managed at home, there are situations when medical attention is warranted. Dr Nigam suggested that you should seek immediate medical help if:
- 20 minutes of direct pressure doesn’t stop the bleeding
- The bleeding is heavy and accompanied by dizziness, weakness, or confusion
- You either take blood-thinning drugs or have a history of bleeding issues
- You’re experiencing recurrent nosebleeds without an apparent cause
- The nosebleed follows an injury to the head or face
Conclusion
Nosebleeds can vary in severity and underlying causes, but most often they are not a cause for major concern. Simple preventive measures and proper care can go a long way in reducing the frequency of nosebleeds. However, if you’re unsure about the cause or concerned about your health, consulting a healthcare professional is the best course of action to ensure your well-being.
