New research, presented at the European Society of Cardiology, suggests that incorporating a daily walk into your routine can lower the risk of heart rhythm disorders, such as atrial fibrillation (AFib), and reduce the chances of experiencing a stroke. The study analysed data from more than 15,000 individuals who had not previously been diagnosed with AFib. These participants underwent exercise treadmill tests between 2003 and 2012.
The study categorised participants into three fitness levels based on their metabolic equivalents (METs) achieved during the treadmill test: low (below 8.57 METs), medium (8.57 to 10.72), and high (above 10.72). The results indicated that individuals with greater exercise performance had lower rates of AFib. Notably, even a simple daily walk was found to have a positive impact.
Specifically, the probability of remaining free from atrial fibrillation over a five-year period was 97.1%, 98.4%, and 98.4% in the low, medium, and high fitness groups, respectively. Dr. Shih-Hsien Sung, MD, PhD, the study’s author and an associate professor at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University in Taipei, Taiwan, emphasised that exercise capacity is influenced by various factors, including age, existing health conditions, and cardiovascular fitness. The study highlighted that individuals achieving METs of less than 6-9 were at a higher risk of developing AFib.

Dr. Sung recommended that given the modifiable nature of morbidities and fitness levels, a simple daily walking routine could help mitigate the risks of AFib. Additionally, the findings indicated that exercise capacity might also contribute to reducing the risk of stroke, extending its benefits beyond the realm of AFib-associated risks.
In summary, this research underscores the potential benefits of regular exercise, even in the form of a daily walk, in reducing the risk of heart rhythm disorders like AFib and lowering the likelihood of experiencing a stroke.
