Bollywood actor Bipasha Basu Singh Grover recently disclosed the challenging trajectory she and her husband, Karan Singh Grover, traversed as they embraced parenthood. Basu shared that it was on the third day following the birth of their daughter, Devi Basu Singh Grover when they learned of a heartrending reality – Devi was born with two holes in the heart, a condition known as Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD). The couple had to confront the necessity of heart surgery for their infant when she was merely three months old.
In a candid conversation on Instagram Live with actor and model Neha Dhupia, Basu reflected that their journey as parents had diverged significantly from the conventional narrative. Initially hesitant to share this, Basu explained that she now believed in sharing it because there were many mothers who had supported her during that challenging period. She added that finding such empathetic support had been a challenging task in itself.
Bipasha Basu added that they were unaware of VSD. However, Devi exhibited remarkable resilience right from the start. They were informed that a monthly scan was necessary to monitor whether the condition was resolving on its own. However, given the substantial size of the hole, it was suggested that the possibility of self-healing was uncertain, and surgery might be unavoidable. Basu said that the surgery went on for six hours, which was followed by sleepless nights.

Expert Explains Ventricular Septal Defect And When Is Surgery Needed
Dr Vijay Kumar, Senior Consultant Interventional Cardiologist, Ujala Cygnus Group of Hospitals, explained this health condition and the need for surgery.
Dr Kumar said, “VSD is a type of congenital heart defect, which is an abnormal opening between the heart’s chambers that can disrupt blood flow. The timing of surgery depends on the size and location of the hole, as well as the patient’s overall health. In some cases, surgery may be done soon after birth or during infancy if the defect poses significant risks. However, for smaller holes that don’t cause immediate issues, doctors might opt for a ‘wait-and-watch’ approach, closely monitoring the condition and deciding on surgery when appropriate.”
According to StatPearls, VSDs are the most common heart problems babies are born with. They’re also the second most common issue in adults, after bicuspid aortic valves. These defects cause a problem because they create an abnormal opening between the heart’s two main pumping chambers, leading to a mix-up of blood.

Dr Kumar added, “A health expert would assess each case individually to determine the best course of action for the patient’s well-being. If you suspect you or someone you know has a hole in the heart, it’s essential to consult a healthcare professional for proper evaluation and personalized advice.”
